Eliminate Time Wasting Activities

  • Looking through physical files for information.
  • Looking through emails and business cards for contact information that should have been added in your organizer software (i.e. Outlook)
  • Having a disorganized and messy inbox, either the real one on your desk or your email software.  Only items that require action should be in your inbox.  Junk mail, old emails, and irrelevant emails do not belong in your inbox.  Ignore and delete the junk mail and move the important items to separate sub-folders after you have read and/or acted on them.
  • Reading and responding to, all the emails in a specific email subject chain instead of looking at the most recent one (the last one received) in the chain first.
  • Reading blogs and news stories that may be interesting, but are not relevant to your business, challenges or responsibilities.
  • Being part of networking organizations that are not relevant to your business or will not facilitate building valuable relationships or friendships.
  • Remaining part of a networking organization after putting in a lot of time and effort and getting nothing in return.  Give the organization a fair amount of time.  If there are not any benefits, then cut back on your participation.
  • Meeting with people who won’t provide an agenda in advance so you can decide whether to attend the meeting.  If attending, then you have an opportunity to prepare for the meeting.
  • Meeting with people who just want something from you and will not reciprocate.  This takes time and energy that could be devoted to more productive matters.
